Very informative website - well done!!
My Mother and Father (Evelyn and Johann (John) Rainer) lived there for some years and myself and 3 sisters were all born there (Karin, Pauline, Tamara and Wendy). Unfortunately we have been unable to get back there for an Easter so far but hope to next year to catch up with other Radium Hillites and checkout the changes. We did manage a drive up there 20++ years ago and there was nothing there so we look forward to seeing the results of everyones hard work!!)
Cheers

We all four will be thinking about you camping whilst we camp out in England.
REgards to you all.

Answer to your query Tam, nae. However there are now 82 house sites where the former occupants have had their names and family details mounted on a plaque at the house site where they used to live. Not bad when you consider that there were 160 house sites in the town. Some more will be added during the Easter 2010 get together at Radium Hill.
Happy New Year to you and cheers from Australia and Radium Hill.
Tam McGovern Dec 11 2009 7:20 PM

Hi everyone I recently attended the 18th State History Conference held on the York Peninsula. What a good opportunity it was to hear the wonderful old stories of the people and places that shaped the history of the region. Kevin Kakoscke was one of the many Speakers.Kevin's story called No Gold Medals and told of how the women folk became the unsung heroins of the goldfields during the depression as they battled the elements caring for their man and children.Very touching.Thankyou Kevin your story is one I will not forget. regards Lois Harvie

Hi Kevin, June, Pam, Trevor, etc., etc., etc...
Don't know how many ex-Radium Hill-ites have ever tried to find Radium Hill on Google Earth, no mean feat, as it didn't initially come up when I typed in 'Radium Hill'... Have now fixed that and I must say, once I found it, it was like getting on my pushbike again, peddling off to the shops, down to Dad's Service Station, past Sheehan's Store, the Drive-In, then up to the Swimming Pool, the screaming down the hill, (no brakes,) down past our place and all the way down to the Primary School..! It's amazing that all of these features and much, much more can still be readily identified from 'space'...
Hi to everyone...
Kevin Kakoschke Jun 21 2009 9:42 PM
Hello there,
From Tues. 19th. May till the 28th. Rod Lawrence, Ian Husband,Barry & Kevin Kakoschke re-roofed two rooms of the Catholic Church for storage purposes, installed a stainless steel cross on the end wall of the church, extended a wind break at the BBQ shed and constructed two plinths at the cemetery for the future re-interment of the late Jack and Laurel Andrews ashes. We also did more work on our gold prospect which is looking promising. We will be returning to RH on the 16th July for 10 days to further our gold exploration efforts. Good hands on the pick and shovel are welcome to join us

Dear Kevin & June, I must thank you for a wonderful weekend. Everyone in our group 'the Suzuki Girls' enjoyed every minute of each day. Besides having a fun time it was educational, interesting, exciting, and adventurous. We all enjoyed the 4WD trips and looking for gold, emeralds etc. Thank you Kevin for commenting along the way and at different destinations. What an amazing campsite- movies! cricket! We were too tired to join in -Saturday evening took a lot out of us. Funerals, church service with additional Divine Intervention-Sister Mary Elizabeth will never forget this special time. Just to top things off a blooming romance! A big Thank You to both of you-Love Betty Smith

Hi there,
Just a note to say, i went to visit Radium Hill at Easter time.
I went with Karen K. All of us girls had a ball. It was a great weekend, there are activities for anyone to be involved, movies, church services, gold fossicking, 4 wheel driving tag-a-longs. We were known as the "Suzuki girls" Karens 4 wheeler got us through all the places the whole trek went along.
We experienced all these things, way out in the sparse uninhabited town of Radium Hill .We spent nights by the campfire, familys having BBQs, concert, movie nights.
It is such a great place, to get away and have such a relaxing, camping time.
Ann Apr 26 2009 6:49 PM
Easter 2009 was a busy, fun filled long weekend jam-packed with entertainment and activities to keep us amused most of the day and evening. The weather was perfect for events such as the outdoor cinema, interment and unveiling of memorial plaques in the cemetery, fossicking for gold on the tag-a-long where unfortunately not a lot (if any) of the shiny yellow mental was found.
The perfect weather continued for the wonderful entertainment and fireworks on Saturday evening and the Sunday morning service in the church ruins led by Pam followed by the very exciting, inaugural Easter Sunday Cricket Match on the newly developed dry and dusty pitch, just a short distance from camp.
The rules for the cricket match were modified to give every player no matter their age, size or skill level equitable access to batting, bowling and fielding. All players put in a huge effort and did their best although there were some stand-out performances particularly by some of the fielders. There was the fantastic one bounce one hand catch by a young player concluding in a very spectacular roll in the dust and prickles to keep the ball in his hand. Then there was the exceptionally skilful catch where one of the more mature players had to reach up high above his head to pluck a well struck ball out of the air with just one hand only to let the next ball slip between his hands and legs to run away for a four. All in all it was a very entertaining match and I hope it will be include in future Easter weekend programs. After the match there was time for a quick lunch then off on another tag-a-long the perfect weather continuing for another outdoor picture show to end the day.

Hi fellow Hill billies!
Yes the mighty Ford LTD hybrid 4WD will be making the trip again this Easter. This time I'm bringing my two younger brothers. They are of course too young to have lived at Radium Hill, but they have both wanted for a long time to visit the old place.
See you on Friday!
Pam Morrison Mar 27 2009 9:22 PM
Hi Folks,

Everyone out there in ex-Radium Hill land - pack your vans and tents, and join us for this coming Easter - you must be totally self sufficient because in case you've forgotten, the 'Retail Store' and 'Sheehan's Store' ain't there anymore!!

We always have a great time, which of course includes our daily Happy Hours, as we watch the sun set over the Maldorkeys, and we sip our Champers - sorry folks (for those of you who are old enough to remember)'Barossa Pearl' is off the wine list these days! Lots of laughs - trips down 'memory lane' - stories recycled (each time a bit more dramatic or funny than the last!) but no one minds!!

We have a fantastic Concert on the Saturday night - stars of stage and screen have nothing on us with our great costumes and of course fantastic acts! We always spend a day at the Maldorkeys - always water there - birds etc - just a little oasis waiting for you to come and enjoy and remember.

I lived at Radium Hill from 1955-1961 - worked in the Mine Office - Dave Langhorne was my boss - it was a wonderful place to be single - I enjoyed being part of the Drama Group - Table Tennis - playing Tennis at night and also in blistering heat Saturday after Saturday in the middle of Summer - travelling to the'Kimberleys' every October for the Race Meeting, and all night Woolshed Dance to the beat of the Peterborough Band - there was so much to do and looking back it was one of the happiest times of my life.

My father was Harry Morrison, and he was a Foreman on the Mine, and sadly died in 1961 just before the closure of the Mine - he was only 51 - my Mum was Glad Morrison and my brothers and sisters are Trevor,
Sandra, John and Sue.

Hoping some of you may make it to Radium Hill sometime - it would be great to catch up!

Last Easter I recall the impressive sight of 20 or more 4x4 vehicles snaking across the Radium Hill country side heading towards the Maldorky Ranges with the leading vehicles already out of sight over the crest of the hill,I was thinking was it the allure of gold and silver that was the attraction to participate in the tag-a-long trip lead by Kevin Kakoschke to the far side of the Maldorky's where a promising gold bearing reef was discovered earlier this year, sounds very exciting.I for one am looking forward to going on this Easters 2009 tag-a-long with Kevin where there is the chance of everyone finding interesting samples of rocks that just might have a speck of gold. You never know, hope to see you there it will be a lot of fun anyway. Cheers everyone Lois

On March 1st. Rod lawrence, Ian Husband, Barry Kakoschke and myself spent 8 days preparing for Easter 1009 at Radium Hill and prospecting. It should be great at Easter. We also found some gold, beautiful azurite crystals, lead, tin, molybdenite and a figurine quartz crystal. Hope that you are as lucking come Easter on our tag-a-long trip. A number want to hike up to the giant leaning rock pillar at the Maldorky's. Drive to suit the road conditions and we will see you there to enjoy the week-end of entertainment and adventure with us. Cheers, Kevin

Hello there,
The book, 'Rock Star' the story of Reg Sprigg - an outback legend', by daughter-in-law Kristin Weidenbach will be launched at 6pm Tues. 2nd Sept. at the Adelaide Museum. It will mention Reg's involvement with Radium Hill, Griselda's love of the place, plus many other aspects of his unique life experiences. If it is as good as Kristen's other book,'Mailman of the Birdsville Track: the story of Tom Kruse', then it will be very good reading. I'll give a short review in our next Radium Hill newsletter, Feb.2009.
Cheers.

I made my first trip back in 2006 alone, in 2007 I took my mum for her first trip back, in 2008 I will be taking my wife for her first visit. I want her to feel the Radium Hill magic too. See you all at Easter!

I worked at RH from mid 1959 to the closure of the mine. Only just saw the Guestbook and think it is a great way to get in touch with former friends. I now live in Brisbane and can be contacted via email on: hansh@silverpeers.com ! Would love to hear from former colleagues, especially from the mighty RH Soccer team! :-)))))

Hi Folks,
Great to have the opportunity to 'connect' with you on the net.
A few of us are off to Radium Hill for a few days over the October long week-end, and as usual are really looking forward to it - after all these years it still has a feeling of 'home' about it when we visit. This year there have been some good rains at times, so we're all hoping to see some Sturt
Desert Peas and other wildflowers.
Will post a 'Sturt Desert Pea' report on my return!

Hi, Just want to say that the 16th State History Conference of SA that was held at Tanunda on the 3rd 4th and 5th of August was excellent, one of the best session's was Kevin Kakoschke's talk of Radium Hill, 'From Bindi to Boom town', which was interesting and informative, but at the same time amusing and very entertaining, a pleasure to listen to and really great seeing Kevin in action. Great work Kevin. The Saturday afternoon bus tour to Angaston visiting sites associated with the Angas family was especially good also. It was a good weekend. Lois Harvie

Just popped by to take a look, as my mothers family all lived in Radium Hill some years ago around 1955'ish (i think). It'd be good to hear from anyone who knew them, Margret and Frank, John & Vivienne(The Cicirko's)!

I only heard the last five minutes of an interview on the ABC Radio this morning at 1.55 and it stirred my interest. I'd never heard of Radiumhill and have sent details about your website to some NZ friends.

Well, I made it. Even though I travelled alone, I made it to the Easter 2006 reunion, and loved every minute of it (my first time back). I travelled over 1,000 km there on Good Friday, and back (to Frankston, Victoria) on Easter Monday, to spend 3 magical nights at Radium Hill. It was one of the most fantastic trips of my life. I met and reminisced with people whom I had never met or didn't remember, and it was as if we knew each other well. That's the magic of Radium Hill. And I rescued a doomed brown snake! I saw my dad's name on a plaque at the post office, and camped near where we used to live. I found one of my old plastic skittles in the front yard, and what I think were my mum's sandals, slowly disintegrating in the dry central Australian heat. Perhaps contrary to the rule 'leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs', I brought home a galvanised roofing nail, looking like new, and a halfpenny which looked like it had been dropped the day before. These items had been waiting for over 40 years for me to find them, hardly aged, unlike me, and with a tear in my eye I write this for you all to read; we were Radium Hill!
Thanks to Kevin and June, and all the other organisers for making this a most memorable experience.

PS. my mum (Flo Mansfield), who has never been back, wants to return, so hopefully I'll get to take her next Easter.
Cheers,
Bob.

I have visited the Radium Hill site twice and find it amazing. The time and effort put into preserving the site is a credit to all involved. You all should be very proud of your achievements.
Rae Johnston Apr 16 2006 11:03 AM
I worked at RH 1953/54 as an underground air hoist operator. Sadly the only names I remember from this time are Harry Morrison who later became a shift boss and another miner Alec Blight.

I was aged about 6 when my father (Ern Mansfield) was postmaster at Radium Hill. I have some strong memories of those days, and to this day I love getting out into similar Australian bush. My father has passed away, but my mother keeps me up to date with your newsletter. I hope to make it to the Hill this Easter (my first ever time back there!) Cheers, Bob (Robert).

Hi Kevin,
Unfortunately due to family committments cannot make it to the 2006 reunion. Very disapointed (and upset)but....posting to you a bottle of "radio active port"that I bought at the auction at the 2000 reunion at Radium Hill. Reauction it and try for over the $70.00 I paid. If it is given back again to auction at another reunion we could start
something boomeranging here!!!!!
To a very successful reunion
Jennie
